Our aim

Our aim is to expand every child's unique set of life experiences through introduction to new ones from day one.

We use planned outings, indoor and outdoor activities  as tools which  invite children to be curious learners and investigate the wonders of nature, our local community and the world around them.

Gable House Nursery is located close to our town centre, local parks, beaches and the harbour. Children on role at Gable House benefit from this through planned trips locally which are used to create further content for themed planning and starting points to teaching. We are also fortunate to have a mini bus which during the school holidays in particular we plan bespoke trips to places of interest with much higher staff to child ratios for targeted teaching.

Burlington Nursery and Pre School is situated next to the Infant School and is really fortunate to have amazing onsite access to an on site large open green playing fields, and two sperate enclosed Forest School areas fully kitted out with resources linked to outdoor learning.

At both nurseries we place value on access to outdoor experiences and also the smaller experiences which to a child are awe inspiring. For example can you remember the first time as a child that you splashed barefoot in puddles in the rain, fed a farm animal, went on a train? Do you have childhood memories of making mud pies in a forest area or potion making with twigs and petals? We can.... and our aim is to allow as many opportunities as possible for every child to experience something new and exciting every single day.

The knowledge and understanding children gain from these experiences big and small is called 'Cultural Capital'.

Our Curriculum

The Wider World - Our curriculum is centred around teaching children to gain a greater understanding of what lies beyond their home and nursery surroundings. Various monthly themes will cover a wide range of topics connecting the natural world including birds, trees and animals to our wider curriculum intentions.

Planning also covers various  seasons and enables children to start making comparisons between them. We look at community and local amenities such as the beach, the harbour, forests and parks which will provide an opportunity for children to learn first hand how to connect to and respect our natural environment and local community. Our overall aim is to base teaching on children's individual, unique and existing initial knowledge of the world when they first come to us. We will then help each child to build a far greater understanding and connection to the outside world through tailored support and teaching based on individual needs. Therefore every child's learning journey from their first day with us to their last will be slightly different to the next child's journey as different perceptions create different levels of understanding linked to individual personalities and abilities. Our aim is to narrow gaps in knowledge so that all children on role develop at a strong and consistent rate based on individual circumstances no matter what their initial starting points and knowledge are when they first enrol with us.

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage framework which incorporates learning across seven areas as listed below. Our strong intention is to embed every area of the EYFS in everything that we do, building a sequence of learning which builds knowledge and skills up over time in order to fully prepare children for life beyond nursery. We also aim to teach them key life skills linked to the concepts of building resilience, strong executive function skills and a solid sense of who they are as a unique person. We promote equality and diversity and challenge if required discriminative practice in a way which lays gentle foundations for children to continue to learn how to navigate life in this big world with a sense of fairness and respect for everybody. â€‹

We provide a diverse range of play/learning opportunities which are motivated by our desire to promote positive attitudes towards nurturing healthy bodies and minds holistically. We teach children about the importance of keeping safe whilst at the same time enabling supported risk taking so that children accept challenge but also understand the boundaries attached to keeping themselves safe and free from harm.

Planning for our curriculum is based on a mixture of both indoor and outdoor learning connected to our monthly themes with a strong emphasis on links to nature and community.

Cultural Capital

What is Cultural Capital? To give a perfect analogy, imagine each child has their own personal bank..... this bank doesn't fill with money, it fills with life experiences from the very first day your child enters our setting.

Our aim is to fill every child's personal bank of Cultural Capital experiences through delivery of well planned and also spontaneous invitations to learning and play.

Parent partnership is key to this process being successful which is why we mutually communicate through the use of our Parent App and encourage parents and carers to actively become involved in their child's learning journey here at both Gable House and Burlington.

Speech club

We are proud to be the very first nursery setting in East Riding of Yorkshire to offer Speech Club programme.
This programme is offered as part of our unique curriculum to children in our two to three year rooms with a particular emphasis based on teaching individual children who may benefit from additional help in the area of language and communication development. This programme is run on a one adult to three children small group ratio for targeted teaching.
Speech Club was designed and is delivered virtually by qualified speech therapists and is facilitated by our fully trained Speech Club key workers. Speech Club is used nationally in many other nurseries and boroughs within the UK and is widely recognised as a beneficial system of support for children of all ages.

Maths Club

Maths Club is based on delivering targeted support for children who may benefit from a little extra help in the area of maths. Through use of carefully selected, interesting resources our aim is to ignite curiosity and learning maths through play and fun as part of our curriculum. This teaching is delivered either on a one to one basis or very small group basis again for targeted learning. Key staff are currently enrolled in training connected to supporting children with Maths in Early Years through the Maths Champions accreditation scheme.

                             Portage NPA Stamp Of Approval
Support for children with Special Additional Needs and Disabilities.

Our curriculum aims to place a strong emphasis on delivering fully inclusive and targeted support for those children who have special additional needs and disabilities, so that all children - no matter what their individual starting points are, can develop and grow to their greatest individual potential. We are so proud to have just completed our portfolio of evidence for the Portage Stamp of Approval. This quality mark signifies that our settings adhere to Portage principles, ensuring tailored support for all young children and their families.

SEND WORKSHOPS

We also hold family SEND workshops/coffee mornings where families can meet up, have a cuppa and chat alongside our own team members in order to build stronger links between the setting and home for all SEND children. The workshops provide a perfect opportunity to share ideas, gain useful information for other community events and also signposts to other methods of support locally. Our next SEND coffee morning will be held at Burlington Nursery on Saturday 14th March 10am to 11.30am. There is no charge for this service.
